After one-to-one talks with the secretary for education in the last few days the PPTA reports that they are now exploring the possibility of resuming negotiations with the ministry next week.
The secretary indicated a willingness on the ministry’s part to engage in meaningful discussion around the “three test items” the PPTA identified as pivotal to reaching an agreement that will satisfy the concerns of their members.
To recap, the three items are:
- Sufficient remuneration to meet our concerns about recruitment and retention.
- All clawbacks lifted from the negotiating table (callback days in particular).
- Improved conditions to meet our concerns about class size and part-time non-contact time.
There’s no doubt members felt short-changed by the ministry’s last efforts at the table. In good faith PPTA postponed one day of rostered action in order to hear a revised ministry offer. The “offer” was seen by the PPTA as amounting to little more than a reshuffle of the contents of the last one that PPTA members rejected — and it too was rejected. Is the MoE now ready for constructive engagement? asked the PPTA
