The game playing continues…

On top of an indifferent offer on staffing, we were extremely disappointed to discover late this afternoon that the Ministry of Education had released figures from “without prejudice” bargaining discussions to the media.

The core of the PPTA's claim is for:
4% for a 12 month term and improvements in middle and senior management payments
Class size maximums of 30 for general classes and 24 in rooms where there are health and safety hazards
410 extra teachers to resource the elimination of classes over 30
Average class sizes of 26 maximum
Pro rated part time non-contact
Improvements in professional development
A number of health and safety claims.

The core of the last Ministry offer is: 0.85% from 1 December 2010 and 1.9% from 1 August 2011 An $800 lump sum for all teachers (NOT members only) A deferment of the 0.85% for non-members until 1 February 2011 (all of two months, meaning a membership benefit of only $132 gross) A forum to talk about class sizes and report to the Secretary for Education in 2012

PPTA negotiators have told the ministry they would ask executive to consider taking to members an offer from the ministry, if it included as its core: 2% and 2% and a $1000 one-off payment to members, guaranteed maximum class sizes of 30 and 410 extra teachers to enable this to happen, with a compensatory mechanism for 'genuine' reasons, and the proposal on part time teachers.

The PPTA members would then decide if they wanted to accept the MoE offer or to continue with their original claim.

The MoE has refused to make even these modest moves and the Executive is meeting tonight to vote on withdrawing from the talks. ENDS Latest from the PPTA
